The five WHYs (clarity exercise)
Struggle with clarity or procrastination?
Know your REAL why
A simple but helpful exercise to dig deeper into your REAL why is the “five whys,” a technique described by Taiichi Ohno at Toyota Motor Corporation.
I like the technique because it is pretty simple and can help root you in your practises. It can help create consistency in your life, especially when motivation (or dopamine) may have left you.😅
(Super important for my fellow ADHDers here)
Sometimes we are easily influenced by the sheer amount of information and output these days. If you have a few minutes and a pen and pencil, I highly recommend trying the “five whys”.
How to do this:
Use a goal, problem, situation, etc. and ask “Why” 5 times.
For example:
I want to earn/manifest more money:
Why?
I need to pay my bills, and also want to have some fun
Why?
Bills are important, I need a roof over my head, I want to eat healthy and I want to feel happy in life. Why?
Without a roof over my head or pressure around other bills, I would feel less relaxed, super stressed and dont feel as safe. I also want to have more happy memories in life, and not just worry.
Why?
It feels nice not to worry about my bills and have everything organised. It would also feel nice to have more happy memories, connect more with my loved ones and simply enjoy life.
Why?
Life didnt always feel easy for me. I want to experience more ease in life.
Can you see how we moved from “I want to earn/manifest more money” to “I want to experience more ease in life”?
This simple mindset shift and awareness can help a lot in creating consistency in your actions, especially if you currently struggle with clarity or with implementing steps.
If you find yourself endlessly procrastinating, you can also ask yourself “why” five times and see what happens.
Have you done this before?
